Narain tests Speedcar.

Narain Karthikeyan has long been linked to the new Speedcar series which is expected to being in November. The Middle East / Asian Nascar series has name checked a few big names.

After playing hide and seek about his options, Narain finally tested the car and in his interview revealed that he is contracted to the AT&T Williams F1 team for the 2008 season. He also said that he was hoping to bag the drivers seat in one of the two F1 cars.

Back to Speedcar, Narain topped the timesheets at 1:50:34 (Although the Speedcar website says they were not trying to get the best times out of the cars) in the test run with 22 laps, the most number of laps by any driver for the day. After the test Narain spoke about his experience

Most of you who watch stand up comedy will remember the Wanda Sykes joke about Tiger Woods.

It goes something like

People were talking about this Black kid coming out of Stanford and when he won his first tournament, people started reporting that he was 50% Black and 50% Asian.

After he won a few more tournaments, he was reported as being 25% Black and every tournament he wins after that his blackness reduces.

It looks like the same thing is happening to Narain Karthikeyan, well except he has not won anything in the near past.

In a recent interview ( I think with the PTI ) Narain spoke about his future in racing, his outing with Team India and the newly formed Speedcar series, which he is rumored to be a part of.

Specifically answering a question about the A1GP and the possibility of him racing with them for the next season, Narain said

I am in discussion with A1 Team India as we speak. I am quite keen to do the entire championship next season. Arena Motorsports, who run our car are an excellent team. I really enjoy working with them, and I m confident that they can give me the right package to compete very strongly next season.

Narain also hinted that he might not actually be driving in the Speedcar series.

A drive in the Speedcar Series has been offered to me, but at this point in my career, single-seater racing will always be my number 1 priority.

I have to agree with Narain. You can drive around all day and night in a box on four wheels, but it will never be anything close to open wheel racing. I was worried that he was going to pull a Montoya on us, but apparently not.

F1, A1GP, 24 hours of LeMans and now Narain Karthikeyan joins big name drivers like Jean Alesi, Stefan Johansson, Gianni Morbidelli and Johnny Herbert in the new Speedcar championship starting in November this year.

Speedcar championship is a newly formed series that pits 24 identical cars using a 600bhp engine. From the initial looks of it, it’s the Middle Eastern / Asian Nascar series that will probably end up using well known European car brands as sponsors.
