Bollywood producers are rushing to register movie names based on the recent gunman attacks on Mumbai. [BBC]
“Taj Terror”, “Taj to Oberoi”, “48 hours at Taj”, “Operation Five Star Mumbai”, “26/11- Mumbai under Terror”, “Shootout at Oberoi” and “Operation Cyclone”.
These might seem like newspaper headlines of the recent Mumbai attacks but they are in fact some of the 20 titles waiting for approval for possible movies based on the events of last month.
To a certain extent, it almost reminds us of cybersquatting where individuals register domain names resembling popular entities with the intention of making a profit. Obviously these films will take over a year to get made by which time the events of those fateful 60 hours in Mumbai would have become a part of our haunting memories. It is quite obvious all these movie makers are out to make a quick buck by cashing in on popular sentiments.
While I’m against any kind of censorship, some restraint from Bollywood when it comes to exploiting public sentiments and the memory of the dead is surely warranted. There is no doubt that there may be a movie or two in there that are probably made with good intentions but considering the timing even that is mighty suspicious. The best kind of censorship against such crass moviemakers is the one where the customers speak from their pockets. Here’s to hoping no one turns up at the theaters for any movie designed to exploit public sentiments arising from these horrific incidents.
