Inspired by this piece in the San Francisco Chronicle , here is my list of “comfort ” food from the des (in no particular order) :

1. Pavvakai/Karela curry ( Bitter gourd curry ) made by my mom

2. Rajma -chawal ( Red beans and rice) made by my mom-in-law

3. Any kabab platter at the Bukhara restaurant in New Delhi

4. Berry Pulao at Cafe Britannia in Mumbai

5. The Vegetarian Thali at Rajdhani in Mumbai

6. Grilled seafood at the beachside restaurant at the Fisherman’s Cove in Chennai

7. Bhel- Puri ( Savory street food) at any stall on Juhu Beach in Mumbai

8. Paapri chaat ( Savory street food) at Roshan di Kulfi in New Delhi

9. Vada Paav from Joshi Wadewale in Pune

10. Cold coffee at the Vaishali Restaurant in Pune.

11. The Kathi Kabab Roll from Nizam’s in New Delhi

  • I think it is available in the South Bay and as always, 'never judge a book by its movie' and 'never judge a restaurant by its branch in the US'.

    And Chandra, I think they are mini-idlis, they are too tiny IMHO to be medium sized ;)

    I had it in NY, but I wouldn't dare to compare it with what I used to have back home. Do try it when you go to India and hopefully you will have it in your list for 09.

    Is that available in the Saravna Bhavan's in the USA?Whenever I go to Saravana B ,I end up eating the thali!

    I dont know if you guys have had it before, the "14 idlis" in Saravana Bhavan is ultimate.ofcourse, it has 14 small-medium idlis sunk in some awesome sambar garnished with cilantro. I would have that in my top 10.

    Absolutely.The Bombay sandwich is da best. ( for the uninitiated: that is bread, lots of Amul butter, super spicy mint chutney, boiled potato, tomato, cucumber and beetroot with generous lashings of Kissan tomato ketchup)

    9) Pav Bhaji from Sadguru mumbai
    8) Ek Cutting chai paani kum from the thela outside dadar station
    7) Rajma rice at Sardar ka dhaba @ Belapur navi mumbai
    6) Butter chicken from Uncles kitchen in malad mumbai.
    5) Masala papad from Vishwajot Reataurent in Vashi
    4) Dosa plaza sada dosa vashi
    3) roomali roti's with any thing at Bade Miya
    2) South indian set lunch at mani's lunch home....who can beat unlimited sambar????
    1) Ghar ka khaana........I cant even taste food nowdays :(
  • In no particular order

    1. Idli wada sambhar from a local Udipi restaurant in Mumbai

    2. Samosa pav with mirchi and cutting chai from any roadside stall in Mumbai

    3. Chicken tikka masala from Memories of India. The chicken is so soft it'll literally melt in your mouth.

    4. Bhel puri/pan puri followed with pot kulfi

    5. Indian style Chinese - gobi manchurian

    6. Veg hakka noodles dosa from this place in Vashi (I forget the name)

    7. Thaiyar chaadam with mangatokku

    Off to lunch :-)
