Sarah Palin’s foreign policy experience
McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin gave him the surprise factor he was looking for resulting in a post-convention poll bounce. But of late, Palin with her limited experience on dealing with the mainstream media has turned more into a liability than an asset to the McCain campaign. Palin faltered not once but twice in interviews with the feisty Katie Couric, mostly on claims of her experience on foreign policy because of her state’s proximity to Russia. [BH]
The first was when Couric questioned Palin on her so-called foreign experience because of her state’s proximity to Russia.
“That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land boundary that we have with Canada. It’s funny that a comment like that was kind of made to — I don’t know, you know — reporters.”
“Mocked?” asked Couric.
Palin’s next appearance was a bigger P.R. disaster when she showed up with John McCain giving the impression that he was there to shelter her.
Palin’s joint appearance last night with running mate John McCain on “The CBS Evening News With Katie Couric” was a public-relations disaster, conveying the impression of a father coming to the defense of his naive daughter who had gotten into trouble at school.
It seemed as if McCain were called in to right the ship, but his performance did his running mate no favors. He couldn’t help interrupting a question asked to her, and he went on a bit before realizing the boo-boo: “I’ll let Gov. Palin speak for herself.”
CNN’s Anderson Cooper actually visited Diomede, Alaska from where you can really see Russia. Turns out the mayor of the town admitted that the proximity of his town with Russia does not give him any experience in foreign policy, contrary to what Sarah Palin has claimed for herself. This makes a lot of sense if you think about in a non-partisan way. I live in an apartment complex a few feet from the swimming pool but that does by no means make me an expert swimmer.
