Trial is under way in the Sparkle Rai murder case. [AJC]
Chiman Rai, Sparkle Rai’s Indian father-in-law, was arrested under charges of hiring a contract killer to kill her. The trial is currently going on in Fulton County, GA.
We posted Sparkle Rai’s story on Über Desi last year. This story has generated some heated (and in some cases, unwarranted) comments in recent days. [UD Story]
Details of the case as posted on AJC:
(Chiman) Rai, a Mississippi businessman, is accused of hiring Cleveland Clark to kill Sparkle Rai.
Prosecutors contend that loving relationship led Rai’s father to order the murder of 22-year-old Sparkle Rai. They say Chiman Rai, 68, paid $10,000 for a hit man because he objected to his son marrying a black woman.
Prosecutor Sheila Ross, who heads Howard’s cold-case squad, told jurors in openings statements that the Rai killing in 2000 didn’t have fingerprints, fibers or DNA evidence but it had witnesses and a powerful motive.
A break came four years later when one of the women who accompanied the suspect to Sparkle Rai’s apartment was arrested on a drug charge by Atlanta police. She told them she knew who killed Sparkle — and that she and a friend witnessed the slaying.
Rai and four others were arrested in September 2006 and charged in the murder.
Prosecutors say Rai paid $10,000 to have Sparkle killed and turned to a business acquaintance, Herbert Green, who teamed up with a friend, Willie Fred Evans. Samuel noted that Green claimed to pick up a sack of cash from a vice president of a bank, who served as Rai’s financial adviser. The vice president denied the accusation and will testify for the defense, Samuel said.
