Tata, Mahindra approached about acquiring Hummer

Close on the heels of Tata acquiring Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford, [UD Post 1, UD Post 2] Edmunds.com is reporting that GM has approached Tata and Mahindra to potentially acquire it’s fuel guzzler, The Hummer. With gas prices on the rise, the sales of Hummers, which give a whopping 9mpg, have plummeted and GM had to shut down four plants manufacturing hummers and other gas guzzling pickup trucks and SUVs. The editor of the Edmunds.com report asks a great question: Why are Indian companies like Tata and Mahindra interested in picking up all these troubled brands? Do they have a plan in place to turn them around or are they simply doing it for the prestige? If the latter, is this feasible in the long term? Another point to ponder on, are they planning to introduce these monsters on Indian roads?

I certainly hope that any Indian company does not fall in to the trap of acquiring white elephants like the Hummer. This is the summer of our discontent - with gas prices poised to cross $ 5 per gallon I think it is obvious that we all have to rethink the way we live our lives. The days of the huge cars are over and the future is alternate fuels , hybrids and public transport.
