Jug Suraiya blasts the Indian government’s lily-livered response to the Taslima Nasrin and Tibet issues. [link]
By stopping Tibetan protests on Indian soil, India has again failed to take a stance against the Chinese crackdown on Tibet. But Suraiya’s main beef seems to be with India’s handling of Taslima Nasrin (previously discussed on Über Desi 1, 2, 3), the controversial Bangladeshi author, who was granted asylum by the Indian government. Under pressure from religious extremists, she was held in isolation under inhuman circumstances and finally left the country to get medical attention, demonstrating both, a total lack of understanding of the word “asylum” by the Indian government and an abject failure of the Indian government’s asylum program itself.
Given the above, Suraiya’s words …
The truth is that we are just too chicken to take on the big demons - Chinese totalitarianism, religious fundamentalism
… ring true.
Suraiya goes on to rant about the Scarlett Keeling issue, female foeticide and health minister Ramdoss but at that stage is comparing apples to papayas. But his point about India’s lack of cajones on the Taslima and Tibet issue is taken. Why grant asylum to someone and then endanger their life by holding them in isolation without medical attention? I hope the next time someone applies for asylum the Indian government can at least stand up to asylum seeker and say “we’re too chicken to grant you asylum”.
Thought? Opinions?

Taslima Nasrin is a ***edited by mod***. Send her to Pakistan’s ***edited by mod***! How can she blame India??
I read something on rediff of all places where TVR Shenoy says something quite sensible - foreign policy should be dictated by what is best for one’s country - not what is best for the foreign country. On Tibet, while morally and spiritually, I am inclined to support the Tibetans ,from India’s point of view can we really afford to take a strong stance against China? What is China decides to take a stance on Kashmir in retaliation? That said - in no way should the Indian government attempt to muzzle Tibetan protestors.
On the Taslima Nasreen case ,I stand firmly convinced that yes, we have no b***s. The government has totally displayed its cowardice by weak kneed acceptance of the diktats of the lunatic fringe. Taslima committed no sin except that of writing badly ( Lajja is provocative but very badly written).
How can moderator sensor my comments? What freedom of speech you guys are promoting? I don’t get it!!!
