Now selling: Indian bangles at Target

Looks like you are new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

In my better half’s eternal quest for a lime green bedskirt to match our comforter, she ended up dragging my lazy kundi to the local Super Target store over this past weekend.

BanglesOf course, in my household no trip to a department store is ever complete without an obligatory visit to the jewelery and electronics sections. As we’re walking through the jewelery section, her eyes light up and she grabs my arm and exclaims “Look! Indian bangles!”.

And lo and behold, they were indeed Indian bangles, multicolored bangles made of glass. “Made in India”, no less. As interesting as this was, there was no way we were coughing up the $7.99 or so price tag per dozen.

For the benefit of those, who’ve never visited a marketplace in India, bangles made of glass are sold at literally every corner and for $7.99 (approximately Indian rupees 320), you can get not one but several dozens of the same. Anyone who has ever purchased, or witnessed the purchase of, glass bangles in India, will balk at having the exorbitant rates charged for these in overseas markets, particularly the US and A. Previously, owners of stores peddling Indian and South Asian goods had the market (and exorbitant prices) cornered on glass bangles. But now department stores like Target seem to have jumped into this previously ignored market.

p.s. She was unable to find the correct shade of lime green in a bedskirt. More weekends of bedskirt hunting in store. Woohoo!

And Target won’t carefully pick and choose the right bangles and make a customized set to match your outfit. It practically took the shopkeeper 15 minutes to make 2 sets for my dresses..

    Santosh,
Your post reminded me of an old favorite poem by Sarojini Naidu - the Bangle sellers

Who will buy these delicate, bright
    Rainbow-tinted circles of light?
    Lustrous tokens of radiant lives,
For happy daughters and happy wives.

I have been searching for a sheet set in the exact shade of dark brown to match my bed skirt. Have been searching for a few months now, actually. I don’t give up easily :) So yes, budget more weekends of happy hunting :P

I bet Santosh’s better half would settle for a dark brown bedskirt and a set of bangles from India that match every outfit she owns!
