Another desi victim of 9/11

The flyer with Dr.Sneha Philip’s photograph  differed from the many photos of missing people stacked around Ground Zero after that terrible day September 11, 2001 because it read “Missing since Monday, September 10th.” On the night of the 10th, Dr. Philip bought shoes, bed linens and lingerie at a department store across the street from the World Trade Center. She was never seen again. Dr.Philip, a resident physician at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island, was born in India. For about a year before that fateful day, she had lived with her husband in New York , two blocks from the World Trade center.  When her husband Ron Lieberman , also a doctor, awoke   to find her gone on September 11th , he assumed that she had spent the night at a family member’s place. A few hours later, the twin towers came crashing down. Her family hired private investigators but were never able to determine what happened. They surmised that , as a doctor, she may have rushed into the disaster site to help victims and then tragically been a victim of the attack herself when the towers collapsed. [link]

Six years after the attack, an appeals court agreed to let Dr.Sneha Anne Philips ‘ name be added to the official list of 9/11 victims.The appeals court said that while no direct evidence linked her to the trade center site, it is “highly probable” she was there. (link)

 She probably attended a party held by the city’s South Asian community in a hotel next to the twin towers on Sept. 10, her brother said Friday. The twin towers would have been on her route home in the morning, and her brother said she may have died while helping wounded people

Dr.Philip’s remains have never been found.

 Philip’s family attended ceremonies at ground zero over the years and buried an urn filled with trade center ashes in her memory near her parents’ home.

The family is not seeking any compensation - the time for that has passed- but hope to have Dr.Philip’s name to the 9/11 memorial.
