Udi Sampat - American Idols new Papaya? [updated with video]

Looks like you are new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Although I am not a fan of American Idol, Santosh, looking for stories turned into one. Well that and our readers seem to have a thing for Desis on AI.

I say this because Chickpea, sent us a tip about a ‘Greasy’ Indian kid called Udi Sampat and I had to go searching.

According to USA Today

Udi Sampat, who dances like MC Hammer to motivate fellow workers and sings My Way to motivate viewers to run to the refrigerator. But at least he “can accept constructive criticism,” by his own admission.

AJC.com took it a step further

Then there’s Udgeet “Udi” Sampat, who tries to inspire people at the office with music and enjoys doing the MC Hammer dance (Michael Scott from “The Office” would be proud!). Udi’s terrible - naturally. “Did you honestly think you had any chance of getting through and winning?” Simon asked. “Yes, I did.” he said. “You’re nuts. It was completely tuneless. Slightly disturbing,” Simon added.

The song they had everyone do is “I Love Rock n’ Roll.” The judges actually never see anyone singing this song. But the editors make it seem as if they are reacting to the contestants.

Sree over at SAJA has a post up about his performance, with a video. The youtube video can be found here.

Video after the jump, thanks shlok.

Did anyone catch last night’s episode? Was our boy really that bad?

Ah! The show that gave Uber Desi its watershed moment is back and Santosh, I hadn’t expected you to slip. Tsk Tsk…at least Karthik is holding the fort. I came down here to see the commentary on the desi dude and wasn’t disappointed. Now only if we have a Shyamali-like contestant will I be interested in AI again.

People seem to be more interested in Shyamali than Sanjaya… Maybe this dude has a hot sister, who knows.

Ok. I watched tonight’s show. No desis featured as far as I could tell unless they snuck in one when I stepped away for a minute. That was wasted time I’ll never get back.

He wasn’t good but when you watch the criticism afterwards, your heart totally goes out to him. Usually there’s one judge who’s trying to be nice and supportive. But all of em totally killed his esteem. Watch it complete here.

I have not seen the show, but from what I understand Simon went soft on him. That should be encouragement for him.

In any case, we need to keep our eyes peeled to this ##$% show, desis man… they are everywhere now.

      Shlok,
I think the initial stages are Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The ridiculously dressed guy was featured tonight but he was not desi as far as I could tell.
