Green CardImmigration desi ishtyle - If you cannot get a US green card, get a Canadian green card
banner ad from Sulekha.com

Having gone through the painful process that the F1-H1B procedure is, I’m always on the lookout for viable alternatives for my fellow desis in case something doesn’t work out for someone.

Presenting an incredibly convoluted but legal (at least seems that way to me) process from Maple Immigration LLC.

1. You can continue to work or study in the US (without moving to Canada) for approximately 4 years after you receive your immigration visa
2. You can get a 10-year multiple-entry visa to the US. On your first entry into the US from Canada, you will receive a Multi-Entry I-94 Card, which allows you to stay in US to find a solution. (Click here for more information.)
3. You can apply for Canadian citizenship after 3 years. With a Canadian passport, you can easily stay or work in US
And best of all, the processing time for Canadian green card applications is only about 12-15 months.

So is it that easy? The answer: I don’t know. My suggestion is do your research before you embark on one of these alternative schemes. My experience with immigration says that if it seems to be easy to be true, it probably is. But this method albeit a workaround seems to be more legal than what most desi consultants are doing (and that is a whole another post or even blog).

Disclaimer: I’m not endorsing any of the articles or services I linked to in above post. I’m not paid to link to these folks. This is strictly a FYI. With the immigration system setup the way it is currently, it won’t hurt for legal immigrants to research alternate methods and that is all this post aims to do. If you have a success or horror immigration story, we would like to hear about it.

Don’t know what they’re talking about. You have to spend three out of every five years in Canada to maintain your PR status.

Yeah, but what is this “solution”?

First of all, you have to spend three years in Canada to be eligible for citizenship. Secondly, all you gain (if your goal is to be in the U.S.) is the ability to get a TN visa, which allows you to work in the U.S. on one-year renewable permits — but only in certain fields.

It took us about three years.
