Numbers that would make Dada Kondke proud. Tipster Nestor via Uber Stories informs us of two underground desi numbers with catchy lyrics you wouldn’t utter in front of mummy or Bunty but would probably sing along with your friends specially when tipsy or high. If you’re the easily offended type please do us all a favor and don’t read the rest.
Members of the bodhiTree on a bodhi tree?

The first is a band named bodhiTree (clever lower camel casing with the name there). The band is based out of the XLRI college in Jamshedpur, India. Bodhi tree is of course a clever play off the name of the tree under which Buddha attained Niravana, not far from Jamshedpur. Among their numbers, they count “Gaand Mein Danda” (literal translation in Hindi: rod up someone’s arse). Gaand mein danda, was a hit in campuses across the country, because well that’s the kind of language college students speak.
Per the members of bodhiTree, “Gaand mein danda” was originally penned to put across the feelings and experiences of college students across the country in business schools in particular. The song quickly gained popularity after the debacle of the Indian cricket team in the World Cup and became an quasi-anthem of the experience of the Indian cricket team in the World Cup.

The second number is “Bhenchod Sutta” by Zeest, a Pakistani underground band. The songs talks about being denied the joys of smoking with a liberal dosage of profanities. “Bhenchod” literally means sisterfucker, a subcontinental cuss word, popular among the youth and masses. “Sutta” means smoking.
Salon’s Andrew Leonard dedicated an entire article on this song. One DJ Shezwood, did what we desis are so good at, copying …….. er …….. remixing the number.
Here’s the video on YouTube.
And here’s the original number. You be the judge.
Here’s the kicker, DJ Shezwood allegedly did it without the permission of Zeest. If that did indeed happen, so much for the artistic integrity of DJ Shezwood and I prefer the rock based unplugged feel of the original over the dhinchak (scroll halfway down the page) remix version anyway.
Desi rock and rap would’ve become a mainstream and booming industry if not for the nanny type censorship by the Indian and Pakistani governments. Not everyone is Majrooh Sultanpuri. Desi artistes, specially among the younger generation, like to incorporate slang and colloquial terms in their lyrics, akin to rap pioneers from the early 80s and garage bands. The lyrics on these two songs ensure that they wont be aired on Indian or Pakistani or even American network channels anytime soon. That is why we have Al Gore’s creation to enjoy and share these catchy numbers by these humble but uber-cool desi bands. This is just the beginning of a desi musical revolution. Tighten your seat belts and enjoy the ride, bhenchods.
