Tata Motors started construction on the 997 acre yesterday with the ground breaking ceremony. The land acquired has got Tata and the ruling party in West Bengal into a lot of trouble.
This is important because of two reasons. Tata Motors is trying to make Singur the Detroit of India and this is the home for their $2000 car. The current confusion shows how politics can affect private companies, even if the company is as big as Tata.
