Narain Karthikeyan to race for Team India in the A1GP

The world grandprix of racing is into it’s second year of existance. The event called A1GP received the blessings of the FIA last year and Team India was one of the members.

Financial woes and internal politics meant that 17 year old Armaan Ebrahim would race instead of Karun Chandok.

This year the team has been brought over by Arena Motorsport and they have inducted Pathiva Sureshwaren as the second driver to share the driving responsibilities.

Since marketing has been a big problem in India, Team India has decided to invite Narain Karthikeyan, India’s only F1 driver to pilot the car. A good financial package and the blessings of Frank Williams has finally made this a reality.

NDTV reports

Narain Karthikeyan on Tuesday agreed to race for A1 Team India at Taupo, New Zealand in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport event this weekend.

“Frank Williams has kindly agreed for me to race. My Formula 1 testing duties for Williams will always be my number 1 priority. I am very thankful for Sir Frank’s support,” he said.

“I am very privileged to be in Formula One, but like all drivers I want to race fast cars as well as drive them.

“In the recent months, I have had several offers to drive in America and Japan, but I chose A1GP because the race schedule does not clash with my Formula 1 commitments and it also offers a good financial package for myself.”

The race is set for this weekend, you could follow it live on the A1GP website and it will be broadcast on the 24th of Jan on Speed TV in North America

I’ve had the view for a very long time that NK’s days in F1 are numbered. There is no way that he is getting a drive in a top F1 team again. FW is hiring him as a test driver only for the endorsements that he brings, not for his technical ability or feedback. He should move down to A1GP or a lower formula (Champcar, Formula Nippon) and do well there. Last weekend in A1, showed us what he’s capable of.

Come on Narain, get rid of those blinkers and do what’s best for you.

I have to partly agree with your statement there. But why would someone like FW (with all the experience he has) have Narain as their main test driver?

Also, Narain is learning a lot being a test driver. WilliamsF1 may not be getting much out of it but Narain is for sure gathering a lot of information. My personal opinion is that if Narain is with an F1 team (even as a test driver) for another season or two and then moves down the ladder to a lower Formula, he will be mighty successful.
