Poll Results: How often do you visit India

Tags: , ,

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Over 50% of Über Desis who responded to this poll visit India once in 2-3 years. 20% visit India every year, including myself.

Some have only been there once in the last 5-7 years. These people are in for a surprise if their last visit was pre-2005. As for those who’ve never been there I’d highly recommend it, now is as good as any time.

Some personal perspectives:
Even though I like visiting India every year, I really hate the trans-continental flights and drain on finances. A ticket usually bought well ahead of time cost anywhere between $1000-$1500 per person, if you’re not flying from New York. To put things in perspective, I priced a Carribean trip on Orbitz.com and the total cost was between $1200-$1500 for 2 people from the East Coast of US.

After a couple of bad experiences which involved flying all over the US and the world to get to India, I religiously avoid desi travel agents and buy my tickets on Orbitz.com. That way I’m able to micro-schedule my flights including seating arrangements (aisle seats preferred) without having to correspond back and forth with someone over phone or email.

It does take up most of my paid leave at work to visit every year and I don’t have as much time to visit places in the US and other parts of the world. So I’m considering doing week long trips yearly, with the occasional month long touristy trip every 3 years. Most of my childhood/college friends have either moved somewhere else in India or abroad or don’t have time for me anyway.

To those infrequent travelers or those who’ve never visited, if you don’t have kids and their school vacations to worry about, try non-peak travel months but, if possible, avoid visiting during the monsoon season.

I’m interested in hearing from others on how you plan your India travels. Please share your opinions, suggestions and experiences in the space below.

From 23 respondents on the poll on our front page, a whopping 15 drive Japanese cars (ahem, including yours truly). 5 (22%) drive German cars. While unscientific I have a gut feeling this is close to the numbers you normally see in most desi communities in the US. Of course, if you drive an American car and you did not vote, we were unable to count your opinion. But being that most of our readers drive Japanese and German cars, perhaps we could introduce a bi-weekly/monthly car review of the latest models in the leading brands – Honda, Toyota, Lexus, BMW, VW, etc?

Poll: Do you buy pirated CDs/DVDs?

TAGS: None

I went to a desi video store today and the sign said “DVDs on sale 3 for $8.99 each”. Hypothetically speaking, I may know of an Indian grocery store couple of blocks down that sells brand new DVDs with great print quality for $2 each. Should I buy the legal DVDs for $9 (on sale) or $15-$20 (not on sale), or just take the easy way out and buy the $2 version of the same movie? Would I abetting piracy or is this free market at work for a grossly overvalued product? What is my responsibility towards the legal vendors and/or movie/music industry, if any at all?

What would you do? Have you, hypothetically speaking, bought pirated CDs/DVDs knowingly? Will you, hypothetically speaking, continue to do so? If so, for what reasons?

Don’t forget to vote in the poll which expires Monday night.

Über Desis love to socialize with desis and consume desi food

Tags: ,

Our (highly) unscientific poll results show a lot of you enjoy/miss desi social gatherings and desi food the most.

# Social gatherings (33%, 9 Votes)
# Food (30%, 8 Votes)
# Other (15%, 4 Votes)
# Clothes (11%, 3 Votes)
# Religious celebrations (11%, 3 Votes)
# Movies and music (0%, 0 Votes)

I should’ve been more specific asking whether you miss it or enjoy it. So which one is it? Do you miss social gatherings or do you get to experience them and love them the most?

Also for the people who checked “Others”, what are these other activities do you miss/enjoy the most? Thoughts? Opinions?
