Desi watching at the Oscars

TAGS: None

Having spent the better part of my evening yesterday in watching the snoozefest that was the 83rd Annual Oscar Awards, I thought I should at least get a blog post out of it. I watched the red carpet arrivals on E! and was sore that there was no sign of our very own Mrs.Aishwarya Rai Bachhan. This morning some internet trolling had me find the pics of  Aishwarya’s appearance.

As the site helpfully points out : She carried a Jimmy Choo “Lana” bag. Other accessories included her husband Mr. Abhishek Bacchan. As you can see from this photo:

Mr.Bachchan Junior cannot be bothered to get a nice shave even for the Oscars. What can one say? This is the guy who couldn’t be bothered to shave for his own wedding! Aish looked glamorous if safe . I am thankful she chose to wear her hair down and not in a beehive.

Also in attendance were A.R.Rahman and his wife.

Mad props to ARR’s wife for sticking to her  ethnic style in the face of all the cameras and heaving bosoms!

I may have missed a memo on this but did AR Rahman change his name for the western audiences? Why does every presenter ( starting with Alicia Keys 2 years ago ) call him A.R. RACH- MAN? Did I miss some name change announcement?

Runa, do you think Ash should be wearing these gowns at all the prominent functions abroad like the Oscars, Cannes Film Festival etc. I wish she'd drape a sari. Have you seen the latest in blouse fashions in India? It's just a few pieces of strings here and there and gorgeous creatures like Ash look uber sexy in it. See http://fashionworld-hamood.blo.... This Manish Malhotra sari has a blouse with virtually no back, but I couldn't find a pic of her back! http://hubpages.com/hub/Aishwa...

    Bee,

I would love to see Aishwarya etc wearing sarees at these events. BUT
I am no fashionista specially considering my usual style is the
    "homeless person" look :-).

Personally, I think the saree can be way sexier than all these
    plunging nckline/back gowns.

However, I understand that Aish and co are trying to break into
Hollywood and therefore want to do ANYTHING to minimize their
"otherness". I can empathize. When I was working in India, I wore
salwar kameez's and sarees to work ALL the time. Fast forward to now
in the USA and I wear pants ( which dont look as good on me as the
Indian clothes) because , as a consultant, I also need to de-emphasize
"my otherness". All part of the "immiogrant experience"

Like I said : I absolutely love that Mrs. A.R, Rahman dresses
conservatovely and ethnically wherver she is !

If Indians break into Hollywood, they should do it as just Indians. Ash was fine, acting as an NRI in Bride & Prejudice, but how artificial she appeared to be in Pink Panther. Deepika Padukone, not half as glam as Ash (IMO) looked stunning in a sari at Cannes. Yeah, I know, do in Rome blah blah. I worked in the UK for 2 years and I too never wore a salwar kameez then.

Disappointing Oscar ceremony from what I heard. Feel bad for Rack-man though
