Psych, a comedy-mystery show on USA channel, paid homage to Bollywood in a recent episode (tip Karthik via Twitter). The episode directed by Jay Chandrashekar featured among others, Indian-American (and Canadian) actors, Jay Chandrashekar himself, his real life cousin Dr. Suresh Mohinder aka Sendhil Ramamurthy and Lisa Ray.
To those unfamiliar with Psych, the story is basically of two friends, Sean and Gus, who con the local police department into employing them as psychics to help with investigating active police cases. This story line, while entertaining, can get repetitive but a desi episode was too much for me to resist. The plot goes somewhat like this (paraphrasing):
Jay (Chandrashekar) and Raj (Ramamurthy) are brothers. Jay engaged to Sita (Ray) directs Bollywood dancers, one of whom Raj is engaged to, who suffers an attempt on her life. The catch? All of Raj’s love interests have had similar mishaps happen to them, leading Raj to believe he is cursed. So Raj engages Sean and Gus to free him of his curse. Between hitting on junior dancers, scorching their esophaguses with Indian food and attending a Holi function, Sean and Gus attempt to solve the mystery behind the attacks, understand Indian culture and convince Raj that there is no curse. Or is there one?
