Desi couple sentenced in death of child in Oz

An Indian origin couple has been sentenced in Australia on manslaughter charges in connection with the death of their baby girl.

Thomas Sam, 42, a college lecturer in homoeopathy and his wife Manju, 37, of Sydney were found guilty of the most serious case of manslaughter by criminal negligence leading to the death of their nine-month-old daughter Gloria in May 2002.(link)

The father a practicing homeopath chose to treat his daughter with homeopathic medicines for a simple case of eczema, that deteriorated into a serious skin disorder that led to the child’s death.

Now as someone who has completely lost faith in allopathic medicine and regularly turn to alternative therapies for minor ailments , I still believe that when it comes to medical decisions for children, its best to follow conventional wisdom and listen to your doctor. Homeopathy has always been controversial – modern medicinal practitioners consider it so much mumbo-jumbo . Yet, I know hundreds of people especially desi who swear by it.

What do you think?

    Radha,
That is really heartbreaking. Poor little baby :-(

I can't even express my sadness from reading this story (again). I first read about this is June, and it said how "by the time [the baby] was six months old, the eczema had begun weeping and her clothing and nappies would stick to her skin and tear it whenever her parents changed her" and that "the baby girl's skin began to peel off, allowing infections to enter her bloodstream." Her body couldn't handle the repeated infections, and she died from septicemia.

Ugh, I can't believe the audacity of this poor child's parents. I'm not against alternative therapies, but the apparent insistence in it in this case is appalling.

As far as I know, homeopathic 'medicine' is nothing but water. Its a good precedent that these parents were sentenced to prison for treating their child with homeopathy

oops. My bad!. Sorry about that.

believe Australia does not have the death penalty.

Nope the couple was not sentenced TO death, but sentenced in the case of death of their child. I believe the sentence was 6 years and 4 years for the father and mother respectively.
