Anirudh Lakhan Sukhu, 42, pleaded guilty to among other things, armed bank robbery, shooting and injuring a bank employee during the robbery and leading the police on a car chase across four counties. [TOI]
Sukhu is accused of teaming up with Sharman Said and Omar Burnett to rob a Bank of America branch in Clarksville, Maryland. During the robbery Sukhu is alleged to have shot a bank employee in the hand with a shotgun and then using his pick-up truck as the escape vehicle. During the ensuing police chase, spanning four counties one of the robbers was killed when the robbers exchanged fire with the cops. The robbers then abandoned the truck but the police found Sukhu’s identification in the getaway car. When confronted, Sukhu claimed he was carjacked.
Sukhu was also reportedly in financial trouble. [WBalTV]
Court records also showed Sukdu was in financial trouble. Besides having traffic violations and a possession of marijuana charge, he had a Maryland tax lien against him and judgments against him for failing to pay on car loans and two credit cards.
Per the FBI, “Sukhu faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for the conspiracy; 25 years in prison for armed bank robbery; and a mandatory minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison, consecutive to any other sentence, for using a firearm during a crime of violence”.
A lighter side to this story is the inability of the WBALTV reporter to grasp a relatively easy South Asian name, as evidenced by the number of permutations of the name Sukhu.
Anirudh Lakhan Sukhu, 42, of Silver Spring, had an initial court appearance in which he was read his rights.
According to court documents, Sukho told police he participated in the robbery and fired at the teller.
