Laxmi Burger
The latest tempest-in-a-teapot appears to over Burger King putting the picture of Hindu goddess Laxmi on a burger wrapper with the slogan (translated from Spanish) – ‘The Sacred Snack’. (Karthik+Prathima+Sidhu+Runa via email) [TOI]
Publicity hound, Rajan Zed, of course, could not stay away from the action. [Scoop]
Burger King has since withdrawn the ad with an apology. From my point of view, growing up in a Hindu household, I could see how something like this may draw a few “aiyo”s from some elderly family members. But then again they would never actively go out searching for things that were likely to offend them. Personally, I find these kind of proactive protests extremely hilarious, an outright waste of time that makes the protesters and their “cause”, a laughing stock. I blame it on Al Gore. If he had never created the Intertubes, we would never have this motley crew of so called protectors of Hindus with nothing but oodles of time and the keyboard on their hands, who exist for the sole purpose of scouring the Internet for perceived slights to Hinduism. If they would only do the same for real issues.
There are plenty of Hindu – practicing and non-practicing – readers of this blog. What are your thoughts/opinions?
