After a prolonged hiatus leading to some speculation by the media on whether the gig was still on or not, Kalpen Modi, the actor known as Kal Penn, finally started his stint with the White House. Actor Kal Penn started a new job Monday as a liaison between the White House and Asian communities.
The Indian-American actor is taking a break from Hollywood to work as an associate director in the Office of Public Liaison, with a focus on connecting President Barack Obama with the Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, as well as arts groups.
Kal Penn, better known for his roles on the Harold and Kumar franchise, The Namesake and his stint on House, is going all out to recreate his identity, starting with using his real name, Kalpen Modi.
There are those speculating on if Kalpen with his acting intensive resume is really prepared for a bureaucratic position. Lack of experience is certainly one of the chief criticisms Modi will face.
Besides his grandfather’s alleged tryst with Gandhi, Modi’s forays into politics include acting as a surrogate for Obama’s campaign and a position on Obama’s National Arts Policy Committee. Modi also extensively campaigned for Obama including on election day. Modi also briefly ventured into education as a visiting lecturer in Asian American Studies at the U Penn.
