Homespun
HomeSpun: Smithsonian Indian American Heritage Project as the name suggests is a desi endeavor with the Smithsonian. It is basically “a national grassroots effort to create an exhibit chronicling the history of both immigrants from India and their descendants in America”. While the project itself was launched in 2007, the web presence received a boost thanks to the redesign of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program website of which Homespun is a part of.
Some more information on the project:
HomeSpun seeks to establish a permanent presence—through exhibits, research, collections, and public programs—within the Smithsonian complex. There, students and visitors to one of the nation’s busiest museums can not only view displays about Indian American history, but also learn about the role that Indian Americans have played in shaping American society. The development of teaching curricula, multi-media exhibits, trained docents and an endowment to sustain a permanent presence are all part of the larger vision of this project. HomeSpun will also be visible in key cities with large Indian American populations as the exhibit travels the country and public programs are held in various venues in cooperation with local groups.
While the Homespun project sounds like a great concept, we sincerely hope they will work on improving it’s logo (pictured below). Lady Liberty with a bindi on her forehead? Seriously?
