Air France crash: TOI online dwelves into twilight zone

TAGS: None

In the wake of the mysterious Air France plane crash off the coast on Brazil, India’s most reputed news outlet, boldly goes where reputed news outlets seldom go. Some genius at TOI online asks this profound question – did the Bermuda triangle cause the crash? Thankfully, they did stop short of blaming it on the Others.

For starters, as shown in the rightmost image below, the Bermuda triangle lies off the coast of North America and the plane crashed off the coast of South America, a distance of nearly 2000-4000 miles off any reference point in the Bermuda triangle.

Screenshots of the TOI online website and the article have been provided for your viewing pleasure in case the editor does her/his job and takes this gem off the website.

There are honest mistakes and there is gross sensationalism. Does this one falls under the latter? What do our readers think?

TOI is simply Onion News but less funnier and less witty

This has to be the quote of the day

TOI sucks big time- as for their web edition I don't know what their hiring policy for editors and contributors is but somehow they seem to attract the worst of the worst .Besides sensationalism, their articles are full of factual errors, conjecture and unsubstantiated allegations. The funniest is reading the City news from smaller cities .There isn't even a pretense of grammar!

And to think that when I was in school TOI was held out as an example of "good" English and writing standards. Ye Gads!

Hahahaha !! That's so funny !! I always criticize TOI for being a typical masala newspaper and lacking professional quality journalism. I post angry comments and feedbacks to the editor but they never get published ( go figure).

My biggest pet peeve with TOI (and some other desi news websites) has been when they refer 11th July bomb blasts / attacks as '7/11' - just so that it rhymes with '9/11'. In India, we write date first, followed by month. So why call it '7/11'? And its not like they are consistent with this - because last years Mumbai attacks are being called '26/11' ( again, just because it rhymes with 9/11).

Its no honest mistake, this is just plain stupid. Anything to get readers attention, but they have made a big fool of themselves.

    God help TOI!!

TOI is simply Onion News but less funnier and less witty :)

  • There's no doubt about it..this is a result of gross sensationalism..
TOI's known for its yellow journalism...using such headlines to grab eyeballs is common practice for them..

  • You said it! And this is a case of an attempt at sensationalism gone wrong. The author has met with tremendous success in making a fool of himself.

They could have at least verified the basic facts before screaming "Eureka!" The so-called Bermuda triangle is thousands of miles away from where the AF aircraft reportedly went missing!

But hey, thats the way it is. Media will continue to trip over each other in a bid to show who is the cheapest of them all. And at their cost, we the readers get our daily dose of amusement!
