Down under,another student attacked

TAGS: None

An attack on Indian students in Australia  – the latest in a string of such incidents- has left a 25 year old engineering student from Andhra Pradesh in critical condition in a Melbourne hospital.

Shravan Kumar, the 25-year-old student, is critical, said one of his close friends who had a narrow escape during that attack.

“Doctors are still unsure if Kumar will survive and if he does, he will lose his vision or memory”, Kumar’s friend, Srinivas Gandhi, said.(link)

The group of Indian students was attacked by a group of teenagers. In the course of the attack, the attackers reportedly made statements that the students should “Go back to India”. If that is not a racial attack, I don’t know what is!

The Australian authorities have been downplaying the racial angle to such attacks in the past. Yet, they are quick to react to any hint of racism- however imaginary – directed at one of their own.

The Australians have no compunction in taking enormous amounts of money from Indian students. Every daily in India has advertisements from various Australian Universities  holding seminars to attract Indian students to apply. Some fly – by night operations even use Indian students as ATM machines. The entire scenario is based on exploitation.

Yet the Australian government has moved abysmally slowly on addressing the very real issue of violence against Indian student. See this for example.

“Last time one of the taxi drivers was killed, the government promised us there will be taxi shields inside the cabs. We are treated like second-class citizens in Australia,” Sunny Singh of suburban Blackburn was quoted as saying by local media.

What will it take for the Australian authorities to wake up?

The Indian government has shown some reaction at least:

“I have been appalled by the attack on our students in Melbourne. Our consulate general in Melbourne has been in touch with the students affected and with the state police,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told reporters.

“We will also impress upon the Australian authorities that such attacks should not be permitted and that it is their responsibility to ensure the well-being and security of our students in Australia,” he said.(link)

I join in the condemnation of the Australian governments pathetic inaction!

I need to point out that violence of any kind is abhorrent to me . I definitely do not advocate an eye for an eye! I wish the Aussie government would just wake up and come out strongly instead of simply denying any racial overtones to the incidents !
  • I also disagree with the previous commenter that just because someone is a nerd and does not have a full rounded personality, they can be beat up or that there is a justification. Intolerance is bad.
  • I got to know that many more incidents go unreported. As Indians living there do not want to get involved with a police report and may come in the way of their permanent residence. This is something that many of the thugs have known about Indians and may be other immigrants. This is sad.

"Indians are being harassed everywhere because we are thought to be ‘weak’."

The point is not that Indians are pacifists, but that the kind of Indians who migrate to Australia are usually adept at seeking knowledge (i.e. nerds). The visa policy of these developed countries makes sure that most of the Indian students who migrate do so for pursuing higher studies/ white collar jobs. They have spent their entire lives learning hard from their books, thanks to our education system's focus on rote learning. Most of them lack a well rounded personality (I am guilty of making many generalizations here, but they seem true to me)

Try exporting people from the badlands of India (as blue collar workers), or better still, try exporting refugees, who have nothing to lose by going to Zjail in a foreign land. Indians will then be attackers instead of the victims.

Indians are being harassed everywhere because we are thought to be ‘weak’.

You may actually have a point there. Indians, largely being pacifists, don't stand up for themselves, especially immigrants in foreign nations and that might further encourages potential bullies.

However, you lost me with the Sonia Gandhi statement. Like Runa said, attacks against Indians in Australia are on the rise, and something drastic needs to be done by the Aussie govt to protect these innocent immigrants. Who leads the Congress or the BJP has nothing to do with it.

As a first step, India should start at home by stopping servitude towards Antonia Maino and the Gandhi family.

    Indians are being harassed everywhere

Well we disagree on 2 things : a) this has NOTHING to do with the Gandhi family or Sonia Gandhi ( Antonia Maino???) b) Indians are NOT being harassed everywhere - there seems to be a rise of violence against Indians in Australia and the Australian government is regrettably slow in taking action

We Indians are really a bigger force than what we think. Once we unite as Indians and realize we are no way inferior to the whites, we can be a bigger force.

As a first step, India should start at home by stopping servitude towards Antonia Maino and the Gandhi family.

Indians are being harassed everywhere because we are thought to be 'weak'.
Once we are perceived as strong politically /economically, this will minimize.
