Making golf a spectator sport

Most of all, you’ll see guys. Lots and lots of guys, in ill-striped shirts, in ill-fitting pants and ……….. balding heads

[Time] (Karthik via email)

No. We’re not talking about a bunch of desi guys sitting in an apartment having a few beers on a Saturday night or at a Diwali potluck dinner. In this case, the guys are a bunch of golf enthusiasts, mostly amateurs. From personal experience and with all due respect to my buddies, after a while these male bonding events turn into sausage fests and could use, ummmm, livening up.

Enter Canadian-born Nisha Sadekar and her Vegas-based Play Golf Designs.

Founded by Nisha Sadekar, a former LPGA prospect, Play Golf Designs offers a simple service. For a substantial fee, one of the company’s roster of beautiful female professional golfers will play a round or two with you and your co-workers at a corporate outing, with your clients who need to be schmoozed or just with you and your buddies during a bachelor party.

We would like to interrupt our regularly scheduled program to say “Yowza!“.

Strictly from a guy’s perspective this is a win-win situation, the guy gets to hang out with, pardon my Tamil, a hot lady, and the lady, obviously an avid golfer, gets paid to …. play golf!

Naturally, this concept has come under fire from other female golfers and women’s rights advocates.

“When women athletes are treated as sex objects, it runs contrary to the spirit of equality that laws like Title IX are intended to promote,” says Jocelyn Samuels, vice president for education and employment at the National Women’s Law Center.

The women hired by Sadekar’s company are no slouches either when it comes to golf, they are often struggling golfers from the tour.

Many are working for Sadekar to help make ends meet. Most Play Golf Designs players are on the futures tour, still chasing their fragile big-league dreams. By playing in corporate junkets and on bachelor-party outings, these women can supplement their sparse income.

While others may grumble about the “morality” aspect of the whole venture, this capitalist pig thinks that the concept is quite brilliant. Nisha Sadekar targets such a niche area that Play Golf Designs seems to be doing well even in this recession era.

while the terms of individual player contracts are confidential, Play Golf Designs is commanding impressive fees — from $2,500 to $25,000 for their golfers, depending on the size and scope of the outing. This income is particularly important in today’s game, where sponsorship dollars are scarce (in fact, the LPGA has been forced to cancel several tournaments because of lackluster sponsorship support).

While it’s never all about the money, having some, actually having a lot of it never hurts either.

A little bit about Nisha Sadekar: [About.com]

Nisha Sadekar is the founder of Play Golf Designs. A native of Toronto, Nisha played collegiate golf at the University of Missouri. She later settled in Las Vegas, where her sister (Seema) was attending college.

And, above all, she blogs and tweets!

So who’s up for a Vegas trip and a round of golf?
