Nikki Haley: Another Jindal?

From Santosh On 19 May 2009 View Comments

Rep. Nikki Haley announced her intention to run for governor of South Carolina. [Herald Online]

Her background bears an uncanny resemblance to that of one Bobby Jindal.
1. Of Indian origin: Like Jindal, Haley’s parents were immigrants from Punjab, India. [Wiki]
2. Republican, in her late 30s. Fiscal conservative. Anti-tax. [NikkiHaley.com]
3. Has run and been successfully elected in a Southern state. [NRIInternet]
4. Converted to a different religion. [Wiki]

Haley was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in a close vote over Larry Koon, the longest-serving member of the House. [NRIInternet]

Her position on other GOP hot button issues like abortion, gay marriage, national security, immigration and global warming is not well documented.

Bobby Jindal is a contentious politician even among desis with the support largely being along party lines. If Nikki Haley were to become governor of South Carolina, would she face a similar situation?

This is America. Any voter who wants to reject Nikki Haley because she converted from one religion to another almost 15 years ago is free to do so. Such a voter would be ignorant, but, hey, this is America.

Bobby Jindal converted to christianity before entering politics and so did Nikki Haley she converted to christianity (methodist) before entering politics. If these people aren't true to their faiths whats the guarantee that they will be true to this country.

So by your logic any convert can be viewed as disingenuous or untrustworthy? Or is that only linked to those who later seek to serve? Until evidence is shown to prove the supposed emptiness of their religious claims then NO ONE has the right to say they converted to curry political favor.

Don’t know what proof you need … They will never admit it, but it is obvious that both Jindal and Nikki converted to Christianity only to get popularity. Don’t be fooled my friend…
  • Bubba,
I'm not sure what it is you're trying to say. We compared the backgrounds of Jindal and Haley, that's all. No one says she is less or more qualified because she's Indian. Also would be appreciated if you turned off the caps lock when you type.

CAN'T PEOPLE LOOK AT HER BASED ON HER OWN INDIVIDUAL QUALITIES

EVEN AMONG INDIANS, OUR OWN FAMILIES WE HAVE DIFFERENCES IN MANY WAYS

TO FOCUS JUST ON BEING INDIAN AND NOT SEE DEEPER DOESN'T REALLY GET TO THE CORE OF SOCIAL PERCEPTION

WE CAN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ANYBODY BECAUSE WE HAVE TO SEE HOW THINGS GO IN TERMS OF HOW OBAMA DOES AND THE FORCES OF THE WORLD AND THE ECONOMY
