File this under the “man bites dog” section. Kailash Singh, a resident of a village outside the holy Indian city of Varanasi, has ventured where no human has gone before – he has skipped the water, soap and even the toothbrush for the last 35 years. [Yahoo] (tip Karthik via email)
So what does Kailash do instead of showering?
Kailash “Kalau” Singh replaces bathing and brushing his teeth with a “fire bath” every evening when he stands on one leg beside a bonfire, smokes marijuana and says prayers to Lord Shiva
He even justifies his refusal to shower with pseudo scientific logic.
“It’s just like using water to take a bath,” Kalau was reported as saying. “A fire bath helps kill germs and infection in the body.”
Kailash has paid a hefty price for his hygiene habits. Imagine someone who has not showered for 35 years trying to hand you bread or milk. No thanks, has been the motto of the customers of his grocry stores. He also estranged his family by refusing to take the customary dip in the holy Ganges after the death of a family member.
So why go through this, what can only be termed as self-torture? Per Kailash, he has a noble goal in mind.
Kalau, who wears two pullovers all through the Indian summer, said his pledge not to wash was a commitment to the “national interest.”
“I’ll end this vow only when all problems confronting the nation end,” he said. For one, customers would not buy their groceries from his stores
According to his neighbors, people like Kailash may be one of the major problems this nation faces.
“A seer once told Kalau that if he does not take a bath, he would be blessed with a male child,” a man called Madhusudan told the paper.
So there you have it, even weird and random acts of insanity are tinged with misogyny.
