At the time of posting, it appears that the Congress-led UPA will retain power. Congress appears to have gained at the expense of the Left and regional parties. Their major opponent BJP by virtue of making no gains and perhaps even losing some of the ground they held are heading for their biggest defeat in the last 20 years or so.
A few notes:
- The Indian Election Commission’s official election results website was down most of the time.
- By contrast, Tweet Grid with its multiple twitter updates per minute was a joy to behold. Private enterprise open source triumphs over big brother government venture.
- Twitter tag #indiavotes09 was numero uno on Twitter trends.
- Lots of kerala coverage by Kerala tweeple.
- UPA got off to an early lead and never looked back.
- By midnight EST, Prannoy Roy of NDTV called it for UPA.
- Twitter quote of the day: Based on these trends, looks like the UPA is winning.. Unless someone applies Duckworth Lewis.. Hahaha #indiavotes09
- Communists lose in traditional strongholds of Kerala and West Bengal. Is this the Indian equivalent of the Berlin wall?
- Mayawati’s BSP suffered major setbacks and so did her dream of becoming India’s version of Obama.
- Shashi Tharoor wins in Kerala. Could get foreign affairs. A long shot for PM, perhaps?
- Congress’ ground campaign triumphed over BJP’s web campaign. Maybe the average Indian voter is not ready for it yet?
- Tweeple of either party affiliation seem to agree on two things – the defeat of the Left and the fact that UPA could actually form a stable government are good for India.
- BJP appears to be on the verge of conceding.
My theory about the results: In tough economic times, people went with the familiar, the Congress party and the Gandhi family
