Satyajit Ray retrospective in NY

TAGS: None

The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Columbia University in collaboration with the Satyajit Ray Film and Study Center at the University of California-Santa Cruz and the Satyajit Ray Preservation Project at the Academy Film Archive in Los Angeles present a series of films by the Grand Master in NY .

Details of screening here

Long before the Slumdog Millionaires of the world , Ray burst onto the international scene with Pather Panchali, which would be the first in the Apu trilogy. You can see that film as well as other gems like ” Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne” between April 15 and 30 th. I would urge all our readers who live there to try and make it to at least a single screening. After all Akira Kurosawa himself said ” To have not seen the films of Ray is to have lived in the world without ever having seen the moon and the sun.”

Film Archives in Pune didn’t help much.

Thats too bad - hopefully some of these will be released on DVD .Did you check Crosswords etc?

its sad when Ray gets all the accolade

True - there are many talented regional cinema directors in India who don't get enough recognition : Jahnu Baruah , Adoor Gopalakrishnan etc etc

One of the lesser known reasons is the ATROCIOUS quality of subtitling in general in India
  • One of the true auteur of Indian Cinema. But its sad when Ray gets all the accolade...while Ghatak remains on the frings..till today.
  • One of the times I regret not being in NY. I've seen only seen the Trilogy / Charulata / Gpoopy gyne.. etc. Would love to see the less-known gems, though. Any idea where I could get my hands on them? The libraries here / Video Americain don't have any. Film Archives in Pune didn't help much.
