Oh no, he didn’t!

That didn’t take long. Someone had to take a dig at Jindal’s Indian origin sooner or later.

MSNBC talking head Chris Matthews, also known for his pro-Obama bias perhaps went overboard defending Obama against Jindal’s criticism.
Says Matthews:

They had to outsource the response tonight, the Republican party.

Then he quickly realizes the implication of what he’s trying to say and tries to make a halfhearted attempt at qualifying it.

They had to outsource it to someone who had nothing to do with Congress because the Republicans in Congress had nothing to do with the programs he was talking about tonight or the record he referred to.

Matthews conveniently forgot that Jindal was a Congressman before he successfully ran for Governor and is one of the fast rising leaders among the GOP ranks. How is it outsourcing when he’s a Republican and one of their leaders to boot?

We’re no Jindal fans here and even wrote about Bobby’s disastorous televised appearance but clearly this is way over the line. Would Matthews have made that outsourced remark if Charlie Crist, another Governor and rising star in the GOP ranks, had led the GOP response instead of Bobby Jindal?

What do you think? Was the “outsourced” remark a dig at Jindal’s Indian origins? Was Matthews over the line when he made that remark or are we making a big deal out of nothing?

Yes and No. Not so much as a slur intended specifically to point out Jindal's brown origin, but more because he was frantically looking for something below the belt, IMO. Indian origin simply came in handy. And conveniently, at that - what with "immigrants" taking jobs away in these times. If there was something more provocative, he would have used that instead - or in addition.

    Harish,

Everything was wrong with his comment. It was gratuitous and totally racist. There was NO reason to comment even obliquely on Jindal's ethnicity . Matthews could have simply criticized his speech and left it at that.

Whats even more irritating is that if a Conservative commentator had said this about a Liberal governor - all hell would have broken loose. But because its Chris "tingle down my leg" Matthews - he gets a free pass.

I have no love for Jindal or his policies BUT just because he is a Republican does not mean it is open season on racially tinged comments

  • The point being not every person of Indian origin does outsourcing work. Kind of stereotypical don't you think?

What's wrong in his comment? Jindal is of Indian origin - fact, India is referred as the outsourcing hub - fact again. I dont know how the outsourced remark is any way derogatory.
You dont want them to refer India as a outsourcing destination or you dont want Jindal to be referred (directly or indirectly) as Indian?
