And what a desi twist to this tale. [NY Daily News]
Now you see me, now you don’t

A St. John’s University freshman disappeared more than a week ago, and her distraught family is flying to New York Friday to help cops track her down, relatives said.
Erica Desai was last seen at LaGuardia with her cousin, who told cops that he drove the girl back to her college dorm on Jan. 20.
The case takes a sinister turn at this stage.
Relatives said the teen’s last phone call was to alert them that she had landed safely. Now, her cell phone is off, and detectives told relatives that they have video surveillance of a man using her ATM card.
Think the case is weird enough and the girl is in trouble? Think again.
Erica Desai, 19, called 911 from Coney Island at about midnight, nearly two weeks after her family reported her missing.
And the man who used her ATM card?
Desai admitted she hooked up with a man she met at the airport Jan. 20, the day she was last seen, and stayed with him for part of the last two weeks.
And why go through all this drama?
She first told police she had been abducted, but eventually confessed that she had been suspended from St. John’s and was too frightened to tell her parents, sources said.
I remember coming across this story on CNN and thinking there’s more to this, presumably a love affair, family opposition and the works. However, this one takes the cake. Girl gets suspended from college and is so afraid to face her desi family, instead fakes a missing person’s case and ends up in the national media instead. An early nomination for Überest Desi of 2009 – Erica Desai – for displaying qualities endemic to Indian culture like inability to cope with failure especially in the field of education and a healthy respect for parents bordering on fear.
