We received this email from Akshaya Patra volunteers and are reproducing it verbatim. For more details look up the Akshaya Patra USA website or email tapf.nynj@gmail.com

I am writing to you about The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF), a leading organization addressing two of the most immediate challenges facing India, hunger and education, through its school lunch program. A secular, non-profit organization, the Foundation provides nutritious school lunches to underprivileged children in India. We are starting a local chapter of Akshaya Patra and we would like to invite you to the kick-off event which will take place as part of the NYC India Day Parade on 17 Aug 2008.

Akshaya Patra started in Bangalore in 2000 by providing mid-day meals to 1500 students from government schools. Innovative use of technology has resulted in an efficient, cost-effective program – $28 will provide nutritious meals to one child every day for an entire year. The organization has grown exponentially and is currently distributing healthy meals to almost 914,000 students every day. We are poised to reach our goal of 1 Million children per day by 15 August. It is the largest NGO led program of its kind in the world. The foundation has involved KPMG to audit the program for funds utilization, thereby ensuring transparency and a high degree of accountability. For more information, see the USA website, http://www.foodforeducation.org/ and the website of Akshayapatra India, http://www.akshayapatra.org/. For further details and analysis, you can refer to a case study of the
program conducted by Harvard Business School in 2007 (http://akshayapatra.org/PopupBanners/TAPF%20HBS%20case%20study.pdf).

Akshayapatra USA, a 501c3 registered non-profit organization based in Boston, is headed by the Chairman Desh Deshpande, founder of Sycamore Networks and member of MIT Corporation.
Currently, there are four volunteer led local chapters – in Boston, Dallas, Houston and San Fransisco. We are launching the NJ/NYC chapter at this year’s India Day Parade and we will have a booth near the cultural program stage. The main objectives of the kick-off event is to
* create awareness about Akshaya Patra,
* have a volunteer drive for the chapter,
* engage NJ-NY corporates, organizations, individuals to support and
contribute to the program.
Details about the time and venue are below
* Sunday 17th August 2008
* Parade – 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Madison Ave -42nd to 29th St
* Akshaya Patra Booth – 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm,
Madison Ave – 23rd to 27th St, near cultural program stage.

We would also appreciate if you can circulate this among your friends and encourage them to attend the event. Be a part of Akshaya Patra’s vision – No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.
Please let us know if you have any suggestions or feedback by writing to the chapter email address: tapf.nynj@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you at the parade,
Thanks.
