After almost one full year of campaigning, Barack Obama claimed victory in the contest for Presidential nominee for the Democrats. [MSNBC]
Historical moment

A few quick notes:
-First African-Americanindividual of mixed race to run for the November elections
-Every state had to be counted in this primary
-Obama secured enough delegates to declare a victory
-Clinton has refused to concede, could be vying for Vice-Presidential nominee
-Obama will have to face John McCain who’s had plenty of time to prepare for him
-McCain will have be running on the largely unpopular platform of supporting the current administration’s policies on the Iraq war

I dont get the whole african american thing.I thought he was of mixed race. id rather call him the first mixed race person than to categorize him in one race unless maybe the african american people got him in the draft.

Girish,
You are right about comment 1. I changed it accordingly, hopefully that is correct. I think I may have just subconsciously quoted someone on CNN when I was blogging this.
The senator himself - as many people of mixed races do - chooses to identify himself as African American or black.
