From across the pond in England comes this story of unarguably the worst parents in the world.

A British couple, who travelled to India for fertility treatment, abandoned their twin babies in the UK because they wanted a male child.

The mother aged 59 and father, 72, conceived in India with fertility treatment and dumped their twin babies in a British hospital after finding out they were girls. (link)

These prize specimens have not visited the babies ONCE after dumping them.In fact the father - a real prince among men - asked doctors how soon his wife can travel to India to try again - this time for a male child. In case you were wondering - the couple(though British by citizenship) are of Indian origin- surprise!!

This story makes me mad on so many levels. On the one hand there are issues and ethics surrounding IVF and older parenthood that have valid points both for and against. But all of that pales in comparison with this reprehensible behavior.This irrational obsession with having a male child -which is unfortunately a common desi one -trumps everything - every shred of humane behavior.

Its a sad,sad day when babies become as disposable as paper cups. Honestly, sometimes I think that parenthood should be licensed.

UPDATE: There is hope as yet . The hospital where the girls are now denies that they were abandoned .(link)

However Wolverhampton hospital today said that the parents were being ‘attentive’ to the babies’ needs .A spokesman said: “The parents are visiting their daughters whilst they are being cared for in hospital and are attentive to their needs.”

We will rescind the nomination if it is proved that the parents were not at fault.

UPDATE 2: The dad of the girls has confirmed that they will indeed be part of the family ,per this report in the Sun. The family claims that this was a misunderstanding because the Dad did not speak very good English !Whether that was the case or they had a change of heart because of the general outcry, we are happy to rescind the award .The Worst parents Award is still accepting nominations (link)
