Remember the flap when Obama’s campaign played a Jay-Z number at his victory celebration. With lyrics like “I got 99 problem, but a ***** ain’t one”? Some Clinton supporters took it as a reference to their candidate. [link]
Couple of days back, at a concert here, in between numbers, Jay-Z cut the background music and went into a rap monologue. If you watched the movie, 8 Mile, you’re probably familiar with this kind of performance. The theme was “Money over Bros” and in the background screen flashed an image of George W. Bush. Then Jay-Z proceeds to ask the crowd if they’re tired of the same stuff for the last 8 years and if they’re ready for change and an image of Barack Obama replaces George W. Bush on the screen. The crowd goes crazy. I’ve never been to a political rally before and a rap concert was the last place where I expected Presidential politics to play out. With the kind of supports, Obama is garnering from young Hollywood actors like Kal Penn and rap stars like Jay-Z, no wonder Obama is so popular among the younger voters.
To make a desi connection, a few years back Jay-Z remixed Punjabi MC’s “Mundian”. Über spoofer, MC Vikram, also had a spoof of Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin”, which I can’t find online anymore. If anyone has a video or music clip please forward us a copy or a link.
