Last month, Virginia police discovered the charred body of Vanalata Patel off a highway in Virginia.

57 year old Vanlata Patel’s body was found in a brush fire just off Interstate 85 near South Hill.(link)

Initially, police did not suspect her husband Harish Patel, 60. They described him as “distraught” after hearing of his wife’s death. The Patels, who had married in 1996 and had adult children from previous marriages, had filed for divorce in November of last year.

Yesterday, the police arrested and charged the woman’s estranged husband, Harish Purushottamdas Patel, for the gruesome murder. The motive is alleged to be a dispute over division of assets including $ 400,000 that the couple had in Swiss Bank accounts.(link) ( Tip: Santosh)

How sad that money could cause one person to kill another - but sadly money and “love” are common motives for murder!

The sad thing is at 57 and 60, they were probably married for close to 30 years, if not longer. I guess when money is involved, for some people, everything else goes out the window.

Actually they married in 1996 - it was the second marriage for both of them so its closer to 11 years. Though that means nothing - its still sad that “love of money is the root of all evil”

We desis walk around in the delusional state that our community is somehow superior to others. However, news such as this is time to pause and reflect. As I collect news involving “Dark side of desi life” I am astounded by how our community has a selective memory and we seem to sweep any such incidences under the rug by thinking this may be an isolated incident.

It is about time the community wake and and discuss such issues as what makes Desi man feel ok to kill his wife or children?
