Mystery surrounds the death of a Desi student

The mysterious death of Mahesh Subramanian is sad, but the authorities made it worse.

A Northern Kentucky University student was found dead Sunday at his apartment in the Hidden Valley Apartment complex.

Computer- and electrical-engineering technology major Mahesh Subramannian, 20, died of undetermined causes. An autopsy is being performed to discover the cause. Police do not suspect foul play.

According to Dean of Students Matt Brown, Subramannian had family in the local area, though his parents live in India. Brown said that he came to America about four years ago to attend NKU’s College of Informatics.

Mr. and Mrs. Subramanian, on hearing the news contacted the Indian Embassy, found no real help.

In the meantime, the family made several attempts to bring the body to Bangalore, but failed; even attempts to contact the Indian embassy for help evoked no positive response. The family had to wait for 20 days to finally get the body.

“Though he died on January 19, no paper work was done in the US till January 31,” said a family member.

To add to the pain, the parents got two different versions of when their son died, the hospital claiming that he died on the 18th, another version claiming that he died in the hospital, with the death certificate concluding that he died of lung congestion. According to his room-mate Sunny, Mahesh vomitted after eating a pizza he baked, a slice of which Sunny consumed.

If all this was not bad enough, Mahesh’s body arrived in India today, his face and right eye swollen. Now the family has to wait for another autopsy report to figure out what happened to their son.

The International Student Union at NKU held a memorial service for Mahesh

International Student Union is sad to announce that one of our beloved friends and members Mahesh Subramannian has recently passed away. ISU is hosting a memorial service for him this Friday, February 1st, at 2:00pm in Otto Budig Theatre, UC. All his friends, faculty and stuff, and people who knew him are invited to share their memories.

My heart goes out to the Subramanian family and I hope his family gets the justice and closure they need.

  • Suman,
You could start by calling the cops. Also you may want to consider hiring a private investigator. Unfortunately at this time we don't have any new information to add to this story but we will post updates if we get any.
On a personal note, my thoughts and prayers are with Mahesh's family and friends.

Do you know any more information. Mahesh happens to be a second cousin of mine (though I had no contact with him when he was in the US). I just want to help his parents find the answers. Can you tell me how best to go about it? I can start by calling the cops.

It may be that no foul play was involved - at least thats what the cops say here .In any case, the Indian Embassy's conduct is inexcusable .The main purpose of an embassy is to help its countrymen
