Mystery surrounds the death of a Desi student
The mysterious death of Mahesh Subramanian is sad, but the authorities made it worse.
A Northern Kentucky University student was found dead Sunday at his apartment in the Hidden Valley Apartment complex.
Computer- and electrical-engineering technology major Mahesh Subramannian, 20, died of undetermined causes. An autopsy is being performed to discover the cause. Police do not suspect foul play.
According to Dean of Students Matt Brown, Subramannian had family in the local area, though his parents live in India. Brown said that he came to America about four years ago to attend NKU’s College of Informatics.
Mr. and Mrs. Subramanian, on hearing the news contacted the Indian Embassy, found no real help.
In the meantime, the family made several attempts to bring the body to Bangalore, but failed; even attempts to contact the Indian embassy for help evoked no positive response. The family had to wait for 20 days to finally get the body.
“Though he died on January 19, no paper work was done in the US till January 31,” said a family member.
To add to the pain, the parents got two different versions of when their son died, the hospital claiming that he died on the 18th, another version claiming that he died in the hospital, with the death certificate concluding that he died of lung congestion. According to his room-mate Sunny, Mahesh vomitted after eating a pizza he baked, a slice of which Sunny consumed.
If all this was not bad enough, Mahesh’s body arrived in India today, his face and right eye swollen. Now the family has to wait for another autopsy report to figure out what happened to their son.
