Superbowl 2008 Commercials

Looks like you are new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Among the Superbowl commercials featured during last night’s Superbowl was this ad by salesgenie.com. The animated commercials features a hassled sales rep of desi origin, Ramesh Chakrapani. Ramesh, a desi with 7 children is under tremendous pressure from his boss to double his sales or get canned. He turns to salesgenie.com and ends up winning the sales award. The final shot features Ramesh with his wife and 7 children. Moderately amusing.

Were there any other commercials (besides the Carlos Mencia one) featuring desis? If so, please feel to share with us in the space below.

    Santosh,
The salesgenie commerical irritated me immensely because of the unnecessary use of what is considered a “desi”accent here - though personally I have never met anyone who sounds like that ! True - I myself have an ‘accent’ as do all of my immigrant friends but NOONE I know sounds that way. ( I call this the “Apu” accent which exists only in the minds of Hollywood screenwriters and ad professionals). While on the one hand, its nice to see desis appear on ads,TV serials etc its annoying to have the stereotypes perpetuated!

Sorry for the tandem post but someone here at “Time magazine” agrees with me

There was also the Bud commercial with Carlos Mencia (I think?) giving lessons (in picking up women at the bar) to a varied bunch of apparent-immigrants or Persons of ‘Foreign’ Origin. One of them was a Nepali - and that’s stuck in my head based on something he said, that I can no longer recall. The accent was desi.

Does anyone remember anything else about it?

    Oh - and go Giants!

Talking about depiction of desis in hollywood, how about depiction of ‘goras’ and minorities (read the shaved tamil, the bumbling parsi, the stupid gurkha) in bollywood, that is so much relished?

Check out this review of “Goal” where Runa raises the same question about depicting goras as racists and villians. No one on this site endorses the stereotyping of goras or other minorities in Bollywood. Two wrongs do not a right make. We do address these topics as they come up.
