Stuck with a piece of paper, my worst night mare right now is getting pulled over and being asked for my drivers license. The piece of paper is my temporary drivers license and I have two of those.
Every person hates the DMV, the long lines, the incoherent procedures and the underpaid over worked staff are just the tip of the iceberg for non-immigrants. We have to carry our entire life’s worth of documents in our back pack every time we visit these offices to do any business.
Curious Cat, pointed us to the new Michigan’s new procedure which requires any applicant to be a citizen or a permanent resident, which leaves the thousands of non-immigrants out in the cold. We all understand the need to have a safe and secure country and to ‘protect’ valuables (whatever it might be) from illegals, but this is by far the worst idea someone ever came up with. I am surprised that people are not raising hell over this.
Yes, carrying all your documents over to the DMV is a pain in the rear, but at least, we have a shot at getting a drivers license, not so in Michigan.
The State website has this to say
This is one more tool in our initiative to bolster Michigan’s border and document security,” Land said. “It also puts Michigan’s procedure in line with those of most other states. The department will maintain its highest standards of customer service by sharing information with the public and working with applicants so that they understand the requirements. We all share the goal of a safer Michigan and America
Boo Michigan, first fire the idiots who came up with this ridiculous idea. Second form policies considering every person who is legally present in the country, along with differing state laws and third think twice before you sign off on ridiculous laws.
And before I say they did not consider legal non-immigrants, which they seem to have, this is what they had up on their website.
Michigan has many outstanding residents who contribute greatly to our economy and society even though they’re here on a temporary basis,” Land said. “Businesses rely on these talented individuals as well. Under the attorney general’s opinion, those who are in the country legally but on temporary student or work visas are ineligible for a Michigan license, though most still can drive using the license of their home country. We need to reconsider that aspect of the law to avoid unintended consequences for individuals or job providers. I encourage citizens to voice their support for our proposal and contact their legislators
My personal opinion is that the attorney general needs to go home and spend time with his grand kids or cats in case he / she did not have grand kids. Secondly, Every sate has a different legal requirement, try telling the officer who pulls you over “according to Michigan law, I can drive with my countries drivers license” and maybe the attorney general will pay for your time behind bars and for your emotional harassment. Without a US issued drivers license, you are toast. Thirdly, you are asking people of your state, a large percentage of whom have no clue about non-immigrants, to vote? Are you out of your mind? These are the same people who voted for the guy because ‘he looks like a guy I could have a beer with’ and look where that has landed you.
And somebody seems to have woken up the Attorney General and the Secretary of State. Now there is new legislation (which still needs to be passed) that calls for drivers license to be issued to non-immigrants, which has always been the case in every other state. Michigan, stop watching football or whatever it is that you do and come back to reality, will you? With an economy sinking as fast as the Titanic, if you pull another one like this, people will start moving out and that can never be good.
