What a way to start 2008! I cannot tell you how sad I am to write yet another column about a terribledesi crime. As if killing your daughter-in-law because she is of a different race is not bad enough, our tipster Manish sent us this tale of a desi dad in Illinois who killed his pregnant daughter, son-in–law and three year old grandson allegedly because he disapproved of his ‘lower caste’ son-in-law. Subhash Chander(57) has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately setting fire to the apartment complex where his daughter Monika Rani (22) , her husband Rajesh Arora (36) and three year-old son Vansh lived. The three died in the inferno on December 30th.The blaze gutted a 36 -unit building and left dozens of people homeless. Monika Rani was five months pregnant at the time of her death. Her father has been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of causing the death of an unborn child.

If these charges are true, I hope they throw the book at him. Personally, I am opposed to capital punishment but would make an exception in this case.
