With Narain driving his wheels off to fetch India its first win in the A1GP, the Indian media is abuzz with news about the Delhi GP and the ‘Fastest Indian’. The significance of this victory is far reaching. The Prime Minister of India, who is seen congratulating the cricket team when they win the World Cup, called Narain on his win.
Speaking to DNA India Narain cautioned the media about his stay at A1, he reiterated his intentions of returning to the pinnacle of motorsport, suggesting that he had “unfinished business”.
Whether anyone likes it or not, I have won at every level I have competed except F1. I never bothered about what some people were saying, I knew what I was up to.
But Formula 1 is still unfinished business for me and while Williams is not happening, there is something for me there.
Narain’s win this weekend is a shot in his arm. A few days before the race, news broke that Narain was severing his tumultuous relationship with Williams F1, having been their secondary test driver for two years. Although Narain found himself in the Williams car for a few tests in 06 season, he could not say the same about 2007.
Then there was the ever changing F1 rules, which led to the ban of Traction Control. With the TC ban, regular drivers wanted to spend more time in the cockpit, acclimatizing themselves with the new way the chassis would respond and the possible degradation of the tires.
Will Narain find himself a race seat for 2008, I have my doubts. The only teams to have not confirmed their drivers are Force India F1 and Toyota.
Understandable Narain has been linked to FIF1, but given the overflow of drivers this year, it is unlikely that Narain will find himself in the Mike Gascoyne designed car. Toyota have too much money and their plans clash with Narain’s main sponsor TATA. My commenter’s have valid arguments and there is a good chance that Narain will be in the cockpit for 2009, if he keeps repeating performances like last weekend, but until then, we have to wait and watch.
