Remember when we talked about most desis favoring Democrats??? (1, 2)
This guy is different. Vijay Boyapati, an ABD (Australian born/bred, in this case), is a Pauliac. Pauliacs for those of you not familiar with US politics, is the nickname for the small but rabid band of supporters of US Presidential candidate, Ron Paul.
Boyapati quit his job at Google to volunteer for libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul - whose political campaign many pundits have already written off as unwinnable.
The key here is unwinnable. If you haven’t heard of Ron Paul, you’re probably not alone. Many Americans haven’t heard of him either. At least not until he criticized American foreign policy during the GOP debate, earning him jeers from his own party members.
So why does Vijay, who recently became a US citizen, support Paul, admittedly a fringe candidate, who is ostracized by most within his political party?
“It was in the first Republican debate for the 2008 election. I was actually quite astounded that he existed. Not him, the person. But that there was a member of Congress with a consistent libertarian philosophy. As you know, democracy encourages special interests and favor-giving. That someone could be successful without partaking in those things is remarkable indeed.”
Among other things that attracted him to Ron Paul …….
Like many of Paul’s followers, Boyapati sees himself as more Libertarian than Republican.
Paul’s conservatism includes strident opposition to the Iraq war, reverence for the Constitution, contempt for the USA PATRIOT Act, a willingness to criticize evangelical Christians, a relatively hands-off social policy, and a position on taxes that essentially amounts to ending most of them. On the stump, he pummels America’s foreign policy in language that you won’t hear from any front-runner, Republican or Democrat, offering critiques of the “military industrial complex” and issuing warnings that America is being done in by its hubris.
So, Vijay quit a plum position at Google and took up campaigning for Ron Paul. Somewhere, the desi uncle fainted. Vijay joins S.R. “Macaca” Sidarth and Atul “Democrat Kingmaker” Nakasi, as major desi contributors for the 2008 US Presidential Elections.
* “Operation Live Free or Die” is a grassroots effort by Ron Paul supporters to get New Hampshire to nominate Ron Paul as GOP Presidential Candidate.

I hope to see a lot of desi support for Dr. Ron Paul. People like him are an inspiration to the whole world. Let’s hope the small government ideals catch on in India as well.
I’ve never heard of Poliac before. But I’ve been a fan of Ron Paul since before he began running for president. I am probably one of the most anti-fed reserve person you’ll meet, and this guy has been trying to kill that organization since back in the day.
I swear if Ron Paul becomes president, I will definitely have 7+ kids. Cause that’ll be the most fun America to live in and I’ll be able to afford it.
Shlok,
I’ve been following the primaries and right now barring a miracle, doesn’t look like Paul will win the GOP nomination. And that would be a damn shame because he’s the only one who has actually talked issues instead of slinging mud throughout these primaries.
He should run 3rd party, plain and simple.
Not quite sure what I feel about Dr.Paul given this story
I would have thought long and hard about taking money - even if its a paltry sum- from the guy who runs Stormfront.
