Vinegar - The answer to everything.

Vinegar is your answer
Image from stuporglue

While the rest of the country is celebrating the holiday season, I know that a bunch of students will be moving out of their apartments in search of jobs, better places to live in and some just to get out of their lease. I know, because a few years ago, I was one of them.

When I did move, I was faced with a major problem. The smell of Indian food or like the apartment manager liked to put it ‘Curry smell’. Faced with an apartment whose only source of air was, well opening the windows, which meant that the random showers would soak our bed / computer table / carpet, leading to a different kind of odor, there was no way for us to ‘ventilate’ the space.

Which is why I was surprised to find out that Vinegar, besides adding taste to my noodles (Maggi, not Ramen) has a while bunch of uses, one of which is an odor eliminator. Since the target audience here is single men like myself, here is where you can use this wonderful product [via]

For all my brothers living in the icy areas of the country:

Use Vinegar as a De-Icer for your car windows.

Steam-Clean your microwave with Vinegar.

Get rid of that mildew smell from your towels (although I suggest getting new towels)

Remove stubborn stains from utensils, jars, lunch boxes etc.

Prevent cracked hard boiled eggs.

Use as a dandruff treatment. A few teaspoons on your hair and massage, takes a few days to see results.

There are a hundred other uses, most of which can be found here.

And as a side note, if you ever drop melting candle wax on your carpet, let it dry, then cover the spot with a paper and iron over it. This has been tested in the Über Desi lab and we can assure you that it works.

What are your home made tricks?

    the wet towel thingy…really?

    Yes, really!

Also works when you set off the smoke alarm while trying to replicate your mom's famous pakoras ...but that is a story for another day :-)
  • FOBs drink red wine?

I agree. That is sacrilegious. FOBs drink whiskey, beer or rum vonly.

Best tip I ever got :
If you spill red wine on your carpert do not panic !
Pour salt over the stain immediately. Press a papertowel over the salt. This works like magic.

    Others:
    - The other tip for "aromatic" cooking such as frying fish is to hang a wet towel in the kitchen - it absorbs the odors
  • Btw, removing lime deposists from steam iron which is basically the white flakes we get on our black clothes when we use a steam iron:
    http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf22...
pour vinegar into the iron and turn it up high to steam, let it sit on high until the vinegar has steamed out. then you will have to repeat the process with water. Tried and tested in UD labs.
  • When my mother was visiting I would insist she leave the windows open while cooking which is something we always do when we cook and run the ventilation fan. Of course, she had the stubborn desi parent "I know everything" streak in her and refused to do it. Fun times. Anyway, since she did not do that, I had to Febreze the house daily and spray carpet fragrance. You could not post this earlier??? :-)
  • Simple ideas like, keeping bedroom doors closed while cooking, not underestimating the odor power of rice being cooked, using candles before inviting guests etc...but thanks for the tip on vinegar, they seem quite helpful...
