I can’t believe its already been 15 years.
15 years ago, on this day mobs belonging to the BJP, Shiv Sena, VHP, RSS and other Hindu extremist groups tore down the Babri Masjid. This was followed by days of communal riots throughout the country, followed by another round in January 1993 triggered by the Radhabai chawl killings in Mumbai and culminated in the Bombay bomb blasts in March 2003.
Further fallout from this day – around 10 years after this incident, a group of Hindu activists returning from the same location of this incident were attacked and killed on a train in Gujarat. Retaliatory killings were organized by the Gujarat government in what is known as the Gujarat riots of 2002.
Another dark moment in the history of India brought to you by Über Desi. [link]
We all know what happened during the demolition of the Masjid and its aftermath. But going back to the day, certain events happened that caused critical mass to be reached, triggering these events. For instance, what if the police had gained the upper hand on that day and the structure had been saved? Would the Hindu extremists have suffered a fatal blow and never tried something like this again? Or, was it just a matter of time before they came back, stronger than before? Assuming they had been defeated, would the BJP even be voted into power later that decade or come into power in Gujarat for that matter?
Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on anything related to this incident and its outfall?
