It’s less than a year to the presidential elections in the United States. You can tell - every other night there is a debate on TV. Topics like immigration, September 11th, terrorism, September 11th, healthcare, September 11th, abortion, September 11th, gun ownership, September 11th and among other topics September 11th, if your name is Rudy Giuliani. So this story is bound to grab some headlines and generate talking points specifically for members of the conservative media. No surprise this showed up on FoxNews. [link]
Darshana Patel, who was pregnant, was suspicious when her boyfriend Manish Patel added a strange powder to her drink.
Darshana Patel told authorities she was suspicious as she watched her boyfriend stir a smoothie at an ice cream store. When he offered it to her, she noticed powder on the cup’s rim, and the pregnant woman feigned illness and didn’t drink it.
According to a criminal complaint, the woman says she sent the powder to a laboratory and it turned out to be mifepristone, the abortion pill also known as RU-486.
Unfortunately, for Darshana, her boyfriend has allegedly used the same technique with her earlier pregnancies.
The test results came too late: She had already suffered two miscarriages in less than a year.
Manish has been arrested and charged with, among other things, attempted murder of an unborn child.
On Thursday, Manishkumar M. Patel, 34, of Appleton, was accused of slipping the drug to the woman without her knowledge. He was charged with seven felonies and two misdemeanors, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child, stalking, burglary and two counts of violating a restraining order. The nine charges carry a maximum penalty of 99 1/2 years in prison and a $92,000 fine.
I had to giggle at this little blurb.
Darshana Patel and Manishkumar Patel are not related ………….. ; Patel is a common Indian last name.
The relationship between Darshana and Manish Patel has a unusual twist.
, and Manishkumar Patel is married to someone else ………..
The criminal complaint paints a picture of a long-running affair that produced a child, now age 3, but which soured.
The two had known each other since Manishkumar Patel, who holds a legal green card, emigrated to the U.S. from India in 1998, the complaint said. The two began a relationship in 2001 and had a son in 2004.
This story sounds like it would be right out of a desi version of Jerry Springer or Dr. Phil.
This case could be used as a talking point by political sides in this election cycle, more specifically by the conservatives. They will point to this case and proclaim all abortion is “evil”. To me, this goes deeper than that. In fact, in any, the pro-choice lobby is the one that should be up in arms over this story. Regardless of whether you consider an unborn fetus as a human being or not, what Manish Patel did was deplorable because he not only interfered with his girlfriend’s right to choose, but also caused potential harm to her by allegedly causing her to miscarry not once but twice, without her knowledge or consent. In my opinion, Manish Patel deserves whatever punishment comes his way.
Thought? Opinions?

I agree that this is more of a Pro-Choice issue, but no doubt everyone will talk about it.
Is there technically a code for this? I mean does this not raise the question about when a life is actually a life? The question that the courts have been avoiding?
Do not get me wrong, he deserves everything that comes his way, but should he not have been charged with attempting to kill his girlfriend? (kill might be an overkill, but abortions I think have an inherent risk of complication. No?)
That is a good point. Not a lawyer but I’m sure that should at least amount to physical battery or torture or something to that effect.
Post the Laci Peterson case, this law makes criminal activity that harms the unborn fetus a federal offence
May I make a suggestion?
UD should have a spoecial section called”Maccaca Crimewatch” devoted to crimes by desis /crimes on desis/crimes by desis on desis.I’ll be happy to contribute ( articles ,not crimes!)
Runa,
That sounds like a great idea. I hope Karthik is listening.
Where’s the fun in that?
If you’re involved in a crime at least we can get an exclusive scoop from the party in the news
I was referring to the mother. Isn’t causing her to have a miscarriage harmful to the mother’s physical well being? That should be grounds for some charges on physical assault or battery or something to that tune.
