The controversial Pakistani movie, “Khuda ke liye” (English translation: In the name of God) is running to good reviews in the international film in India. From The Hindu:
`Khuda Ke Liye’ is competing with films from Asia, Africa and Latin American countries at the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa 2007 and is running to packed houses.
It is also Pakistan’s first ever entry into the IFFI, one of the oldest film festivals in asia.
“Khuda ke liye” (KKL) is different because in a Pakistani movie industry that is prone to masala movies with mindless song and dance sequences, not unlike our very own Bollywood, it comes across as a more “meaningful movie” minus the formulaic fare. In fact, originating from a country in the headlines for an unstable political atmosphere tottering on the brink of fundamentalist takeover, KKL boldly takes on those very fundamentalist elements [link].
The movie even features the über star of “meaningful movies”, Naseeruddin Shah, as a progressive mullah. Shot across three continents, the movie also takes on the dark underbelly of modern day racism in the United States under the guise of the GWOT.
