In today’s snake news from India:
A snake goddess is buried alive and lives to hiss about it
Snake Ramesh performs C-section on a pregnant dying snake
and we will take a look at how snake jobs are being outsourced to human.

Hissssss, excuse me.

Sapna Kumari, a 18 year old girl from Himachal Pradesh, was apparently going around proclaiming she was the reincarnation of a snake goddess. But the world of snakes being monotheistic, these claims have been fiercely contested by the NRI blog, ÜberDesi.com, who claim one of their own as the “real” snake god.

But villagers in rural India lack Internet access and hence are grossly unaware of the real snake god and believed in the fraud that Sapna Kumari was.

Villagers had been visiting her in large numbers to seek her blessings. On Sunday, she insisted they bury her live (for samaadhi) in a deep pit.

A few hours later a police team led by Chamba police chief SR Rana dug out the woman and found her alive.

They took her to a hospital. “She was found to be in good health, but showed signs of hysteria,” Dr Ashish Sharma said on Monday.

ÜberDesi would like to point out that gods seldom exhibit signs of hysteria.

In other snake news from India, the man fondly known as Snake Ramesh, in the tiny village of Usilampatti in Tamil Nadu performed an emergency C-section on a dying green vine snake and rescued its little ones.

The five-and-a-half foot long snake was found lying on the roadside writhing in pain by P Ramesh, a snake lover and conservationist in Usilampatti, about 100 km from here, forest officials said on Saturday. Though ‘Snake Ramesh’, as he is affectionately called, tried to save the reptile, it succumbed to the injuries. Ramesh, who runs the Netaji Snake Research Centre at Usilampatti, understood the snake was carrying and immediately performed a ceasarian section to save the little snakes.

ÜberDesi would like to thank Snake Ramesh and want to nominate him for the humanitarian …. hissss, excuse me …….. snake-atarian Nobel Prize.

In other news from around the nation, we take a trip to the Naga Panchami (Snake Festival) in Shirala, Maharashtra, where the age of outsourcing has caught up with ancient traditions.

In India snakes are protected by law and you cannot collect them from the wild without a licence - a licence that none of the snake handlers at this festival possessed.

Most snake handlers have simply replaced their snakes with dancing girls - local teenagers who gyrate on a platform while crowds of young men shout encouragement and throw money at them. The bigger trailers carry massive sound systems which pump out music at ear-splitting levels. The parade progressed, the music pulsed, the crowd heaved and flowed down the streets and, in the stifling humidity, the dancers’ expressions changed from determined enjoyment to grim endurance.

Snakes being outsourced to human, imagine that!!! Where’s Lou Dobbs when you need him??

This brings to a conclussssssssion this edition of Snake News from India. Namasssssssskar!!
