I will say it again, we @ ÜberDesi have a soft spot for Al Gore, the almighty creator of the Internet.

Party time for ÜD favorite, Al Gore, and his desi buddy

It is but natural that when our favorite adopted politician wins something our eyes well up (with tears of joy) and chests swell up (with pride).

OSLO: The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded on Friday to former US vice president Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Norwegian Nobel committee said.
“It was awarded for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change,” the committee said.

And when this award winning team includes a desi, the ÜberDesi cup of joy (yes, there is really such a thing) overfloweth.

NEW DELHI: Indian scientist Rajendra Pachauri, who chairs the UN panel on climate change that shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore, said on Friday he was overwhelmed by the award.
“I can’t believe it, overwhelmed, stunned,” Pachauri told reporters and co-workers after receiving the news by telephone at his office in New Delhi. “I feel privileged sharing it with someone as distinguished as him,” he added.

This story had not one but two desi connections and the second one was brought to you months back courtesy, you guessed it, ÜberDesi. Remember when two ÜD favorites crossed paths??? Ladies and gentlemen, give it up to the Khasi tribe who honored Al Gore’s work months before the Nobel Peace Prize committee did. But then again when over the years your list of peace prize recepients includes one Mr. Yasser Arafat and not one Mr. M.K.Gandhi, how credible is this list really?

Still, the Khasi have spoken. Congrats to ÜD favorite Al Gore, Indian scientist Rajendra Pachauri and the IPCC team on their good work.

Update: More on Dr. Rajendra Pachauri:

Dr Rajendra K Pachauri was born in Nainital, India, on 20 August 1940. He assumed his current responsibilities as the head of TERI (Tata Energy Research Institute) in 1981, first as Director and, since April 2001, as Director-General. TERI does original work and provides professional support in the areas of energy, environment, forestry, biotechnology, and the conservation of natural resources to government departments, institutions, and corporate organizations worldwide. Dr Pachauri has been elected as Chairman of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), established by World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Environment Programme in 1988. He has taken charge as Chairman, IPCC from 20th April 2002 onwards. He has been active in several international forums dealing with the subject of climate change and its policy dimensions.

His appointment to the IPCC was hailed as a major victory for big oil but as evident from his work and awards he has proved to be anything but.
