Greeting from Mumbai! In between travel, religious rites and the obligatory cold and flu bug, blogging has sort of taken a back seat these days.
As I was relaxing this afternoon feeling the effects of my cold medication, my ears perked up and I flew right off my seat as this searing hot encounter took place on my TV screen.
The man who was seeking Ponting’s affections was a farmer from Karnataka, Jayram Reddy. Reddy was drunk off his mind and first came on stage after bidding Rs. 10,000 for an autographed Ponting picture. After the hug and kiss (first few seconds in above video), he tried to come on stage again by successfully bidding Rs. 90,000 on Ponting’s bat. Obviously he was yearning to score big with Ponting (bad joke, I know).
When questioned why he kissed Ponting Reddy said it was “our Indian culture is to kiss him”. My question is where is the outrage in Australia over this kiss. When a white person kissed an Indian, there was a huge outcry in India and some people went even so far as to demand his arrest. Now that the captain of Australia’s national team was molested on stage in front of numerous people where is the outcry in Australia???
Ponting meanwhile is out of the first one day match between India and Australia in Bangalore citing an “injury”.

The kiss of death?
I also thin that the effigy industry in the outback is not as advanced as in India. Nice time t set up shop.

The best part is the uncertainty, rather than terror, that you can see on Ponting’s face: his multi-culti calculus engine is thrown into overdrive as he estimates the cultural impact of giving this alchy the firm push-off and dismissal.
I’m afraid that the only reason this episode didn’t start a controversy in Australia is that it may reinforce an extant stereotype about Indian men being overly affectionate with one another.
That being said, Reddy was blitzed and that’s a state of being with which many Australians can identify along with the attendant lapses of judgement.
