Vijay Mallya in an interview with the Dutch magazine Formule 1 Race Report has said admitted that an Indian driver looks improbable for 2008. However he is counting on Karun Chandok for 2009.
But in a bitter blow for Indian hopefuls like Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhock, Mallya admitted that the scenario will probably have to wait until at least 2009.
“In 2009, we certainly want an Indian driver,” he said in an interview with the Dutch magazine Formule 1 Race Report.
“We have Karun Chandhok, but he will probably improve a lot with a second year in GP2.”
This lends credibility to the fact that Narain might find himself a drive with Williams F1 for 2008, which in my personal opinion is good. The revised Spyker car that debuted in Monza did not have the “magic” as suggested by the team. If Narain needs to stay in F1 for a while, he will need to be with a front running team, which Williams are working on.
There is also the rumor that Ralf Schumacher might find himself in a Spyker in ‘08, since his performance with Toyota has been sub par.
And thus the silly season in F1 has a desi angle now.
